Hey Reader,
I’m writing this because the LinkedIn echo chamber is currently in a "Chicken Little" spiral over the 1,000+ layoffs at Epic.
If you spend all day in that feed, you’ll start believing the sky is falling. But I’ve checked. The sky is still there.
I know what it’s like. I’ve been laid off twice in this business. I’ve felt that specific brand of "what now?" panic that keeps you up at 3 AM. I’ve been beaten down, lived to tell the tale, and I am still here—more bullish on this industry than ever.
What we saw at GDC two weeks ago wasn't a funeral; it was a filter. The turnout was thinner, but the energy in the room was electric. It was the most passionate, motivated group of people I’ve seen in years. We are witnessing an industry correction, and while that’s painful, it’s also the greatest opportunity you’ll ever have to claim your Career Sovereignty.
Career Sovereignty isn't just a "mindset." It’s the realization that the studio is a tenant and you are the landlord. It’s moving from being a "hired gun" at the mercy of an org chart to being a strategic partner who owns their own narrative.
When you have sovereignty, a layoff isn't a crisis—it’s a contract termination.
Look at my friend David Reid. He spent a year in the trenches of this correction. He didn't panic-apply to lateral roles at the giants; he stayed in the action and focused on his value. Two weeks ago, ProbablyMonsters announced him as their new CMO. He didn't "find a job." He changed his story and secured his final act on his own terms.
Stay in the action, not in the outcome. When we get stuck, it’s usually because we’re getting in our own way—obsessing over the systemic BS we can’t change while ignoring the atomic moves we can. Practice doesn't make perfect; it makes permanent.
If you’re ready to stop playing defense, start here:
- Make Career Friends, Not "Contacts": Reach out to three people from GDC. Don't ask for a lead. Ask them what they’re building.
- Audit Your ROI: No one can sell you better than you. If you don't know the 3 hardest problems you solved this year, you don't know your own value.
- Claim Your Sovereignty: The pipeline is broken, but the opportunity is everywhere.
I’m opening 3 spots in April for my Career Sovereignty Intensive. This is for the 40+ professional who is done being a casualty of someone else’s budget and ready to become the architect of their own career.
This business was never a safe bet, but it is a hell of an opportunity if you’re willing to put in the work and change your story.
See you in the action,
Adam
